Running applications in OCI containers

Available from 2020.0 LTS

PLCnext Control devices are ready for running applications out of OCI containers.

For many years, the use of OCI-compliant containers (such as docker®, moby or balena) have revolutionized the IT landscape. They allow a much faster and easier reuse of existing or custom services.

PLCnext Technology now combines these possibilities: the reliability of a control system, with the possibilities of modern software distribution. That means it’s even easier to create, deploy, and run your PLCnext Technology applications, too. Create your own microservices, or use existing containers!

We're working on more functions and integration in this regard, coming with some of the further firmware releases.

How to

For starters, here you can find help and guidance to implementing OCI containers in PLCnext Technology:

  • How to install balenaEngine and set up some containers on an AXC F 2152 is described thoroughly in our Docker_GettingStarted repository on GitHub.
  • Read the Makers Blog entry which demonstrates how an OCI container can be used to easily turn a PLCnext Control into an AWS IoT Greengrass device.
