Running applications in OCI containers

Available from 2020.0 LTS

PLCnext Control devices are ready for running applications out of OCI containers.

For many years, the use of OCI-compliant containers (such as docker®, mobybalena, and podman) have revolutionized the IT landscape. They allow a much faster and easier reuse of existing or custom services.

PLCnext Technology now combines these possibilities: the reliability of a control system, with the possibilities of modern software distribution. That means it’s even easier to create, deploy, and run your PLCnext Technology applications, too. Create your own microservices, or use existing containers!

We're working on more functions and integration in this regard, coming with some of the further firmware releases.

Note: Starting with firmware 2025.0, OCI containers in PLCnext Technology will depend on the Podman container engine and systemd initialization. For details see the OCI container topic in the PLCnext Store ‑ Info Center.
